The graduation of two Master students recently took place at Ashurst Lodge under the agreement between Wessex Institute, the Foreign Office (UK) and the National University of Kharkiv in the Ukraine.
The first candidate, Mr Yevgeniy Slyusarenko, passed his viva, defending his thesis on An Algebraic Method for Discovering Logic Rules on the Basis of Rough Sets Theory. The main development of his work was to add new elements to the theory of rough sets. His work centred on how to organise complex databases and discover domains of features, looking for patterns of behaviour. This type of application was originally related to marketing, but now extends to criminology, terrorism, surveillance and many others.
The external examiner, Dr Charles Shoniregun from the University of East London, was most complimentary about the candidate’s work. Yevgeniy is a skilful programmer and is now working in a private company in Poland.
Mr Yevgen Kotukh was the second candidate with a thesis on the Analysis of Detection of Attacks in Information Security Systems. His work focused on the identification of the systems that are under attack and how to take mitigation actions.
Dr Bart Baesens from the University of Southampton’s School of Management and Louvaine University in Belgium was the external examiner. Yevgen gave an excellent presentation and defence of his thesis, and was congratulated by the examiner.
The two candidates expressed their appreciation for having selected Wessex Institute for their studies. The quality of their work and the important work they are now carrying out is a source of pride to WIT.
